B58 vs B48 swap — which one belongs in your E9x?
The shop-floor version of this debate never ends, because both engines share BMW's modular B-series architecture and both can turn a tired E9x into something genuinely quick. But they fail at different jobs, and picking the wrong one for your goals is an expensive mistake to discover halfway through. Here's the comparison that actually matters.

That shared architecture is the good news: the design philosophy, service logic, and much of the tooling carry across. The bad news: the management software, harness routing, and mounting details diverge enough that you cannot simply move a B58 harness onto a B48 build or vice versa. Related is not interchangeable.
1 · Donor cost — where the B48 wins
B48 donors are less chased in the aftermarket, which keeps prices down. A complete B48 pull — engine, management, harness, accessories — typically runs $2,800–$4,800, versus $4,500–$7,500 for an equivalent B58 pull. Four-cylinder donors (330i/430i/X1-class cars) also tend to be totaled at lower auction prices than their six-cylinder siblings.
2 · Integration cost — where the B48 does NOT win as much
Here's the part most cost comparisons get wrong: the hard work in an E9x conversion isn't bolting the engine in, it's making a modern engine controller live peacefully with an older chassis. That work — wiring merges, immobilizer handling, chassis signal bridging — is not meaningfully simpler for the B48. Both engines demand the same controller-first decisions.
One real B48 disadvantage: the aftermarket around B48 standalone and integration support is thinner. The B58 has more harness solutions, more tuning familiarity, and more builders who've been down the road. With the B48 you're more often on the factory management route — cheaper, but less flexible.
Realistic parts totals (planning estimates): a B58 E9x build lands around $9,000–$14,000 in parts for a solid DIY spec; a B48 build lands around $6,500–$10,000. Verify current salvage prices before committing — these bands move with the market.
3 · Weight and balance — where the B48 quietly shines
Commonly cited weights with accessories: the B58 lands around 370–390 lbs, the B48 around 285–310 lbs — roughly 80 lbs lighter over the front axle. In an E9x that's not trivia:
- B58 in an E90: front-axle loading comparable to a factory six — balanced, predictable, planted
- B48 in an E90: noticeably lighter nose — more willing to rotate, which track-day drivers tend to like
- Heavier bodies (E91 wagon, E92 coupe): the B58's torque suits the extra mass better
For a dedicated lightweight project the B48 has a real argument. For street/track mixed use, the B58 is the better all-arounder.
4 · Power ceiling — where the B58 ends the discussion
These are community-reported dyno bands, not guarantees — your result depends on the exact build, calibration, and supporting systems. But the reported ranges tell the story:

The B48's four-cylinder architecture is the fundamental ceiling — past the mid-hundreds, you're negotiating with the block. The B58's combination of bottom-end strength and turbo headroom is why it became the modern swap engine of choice.
Verdict: if the plan says "over 500 whp someday," the B58 is the only sane choice. If 350 whp satisfies the mission, the B48 delivers it for less money.
5 · Daily-driver math — the B48's quiet advantage
If the swap car doubles as a daily, fuel is real money. Published donor-car economy figures give the shape of it: B58-class cars run roughly mid-20s combined, B48-class cars low-30s combined — about 5 mpg in the B48's favor. Tuning both engines narrows the gap, but at cruise the smaller engine always burns less. Ten thousand miles a year of daily driving makes this line item matter.
Which should you choose?
Pick the B58 if:
- The build will ever want serious power — the ceiling is the whole point
- It's a street/track hybrid that has to do everything well
- You want the deepest aftermarket and tuning familiarity behind you
- The body is on the heavier side (wagon, coupe)
- The inline-six character is part of why you're doing this at all
Pick the B48 if:
- Budget is the deciding factor, and $1,500–$2,500 donor savings matters
- The mission is a lightweight, nimble build rather than a power build
- ~350 whp satisfies the goal honestly
- It's a high-mileage daily driver where fuel economy counts
Bottom line
The B58 is the power play; the B48 is the budget-and-balance play. What kills builds isn't choosing one over the other — it's buying a donor before the wiring route, cooling strategy, transmission pairing, and controller decisions are mapped. Plan the swap on paper first, and either engine can be a car you're proud of.
