B58 E9x Swap Parts Ordering Sequence
Short answer: order architecture-defining parts first: chassis, donor, ECU strategy, transmission, mounts, oil-pan solution, and wiring plan. Delay custom driveshaft length, exhaust final dimensions, hoses, brackets, and cosmetic parts until the engine and transmission are physically positioned.
Buying in the wrong order creates the classic swap problem: a garage full of parts that cannot work together.
Phase 1: define the build
Write down chassis, body style, RWD/xDrive, intended power, street or track use, manual or automatic, donor generation, ECU/DME plan, emissions goals, and budget ceiling. This is not paperwork; it determines the parts that can share an architecture.
Phase 2: buy the donor package
Prioritize a complete, documented donor package with engine harness, DME, modules, keys/security information, accessories, sensors, intake, fuel hardware, and transmission where practical. Photograph and label everything before disassembly.
Phase 3: buy fitment-defining hardware
Order only after confirming the donor and chassis measurements:
- engine mounts or fabrication material
- oil-pan and pickup solution
- transmission adapter or bellhousing path
- transmission mount and tunnel requirements
- steering-shaft clearance solution
- cooling layout and radiator/charge-cooler plan
Do not assume a product made for a different E-series chassis has the same steering, subframe, or sump clearance.
Phase 4: wire and test on the floor
Before the engine disappears into the bay, build the harness plan and label branches. Confirm DME power, grounds, diagnostic communication, sensor continuity, throttle control, and the intended CAN bridge or controller strategy.
A floor test is cheaper than removing the engine again.
Phase 5: order measured fabrication
Once the powertrain is mounted, measure for driveshaft length, exhaust routing, intake, coolant hoses, charge pipes, fuel lines, and heat shielding. Order these after the hard points are known.
Phase 6: buy service and first-start consumables
Gaskets, fluids, filters, belts, plugs, clamps, heat protection, terminals, loom, fuses, and fasteners are not glamorous, but they determine whether the car can start safely. Keep a dedicated “first start” bin so small consumables do not disappear.
The delay list
Delay wheels, cosmetic engine-bay parts, final exhaust finish, custom hoses cut to guessed lengths, and expensive tuning revisions until the engine runs and the baseline scan is clean.
The parts matrix columns
Track part name, part number, donor, supplier, quantity, price, shipping, fitment note, receipt, installed status, and verification source. Add a “why this part” column. That column exposes duplicate purchases and incompatible assumptions.
