B58 E9x First-Start Checklist
Short answer: the first start should happen only after you have verified oiling, fuel containment, DME communication, security authorization, cooling circulation, throttle control, exhaust clearance, and emergency shutdown access. A staged first-start checklist protects the engine and makes debugging far easier.
Do not treat the first start as a test of luck. Treat it as the final inspection of every subsystem you installed.
Stage 1: static inspection
- Engine mounts and transmission mount torqued and marked.
- Oil pan, drain plug, filter housing, and oil cooler fittings dry.
- Correct engine oil filled to the intended level.
- Coolant system filled using the correct bleeding procedure.
- Fuel lines routed away from heat and secured at every support point.
- No open fuel, oil, coolant, vacuum, or charge-air ports.
- Exhaust and downpipe clear of steering, wiring, brake lines, and body panels.
- Driveshaft and exhaust have adequate movement clearance.
- Battery secured and main fuses installed correctly.
Stage 2: electrical and network checks
With the battery connected, inspect for smoke, heat, unexpected current draw, or energized components. Confirm DME communication with the diagnostic tool before cranking.
Verify grounds under load, DME power, fuel-pump power, throttle-body connection, crank and cam sensor connections, and the integration path for the E9x chassis CAN network.
Save the initial scan. A baseline scan is more useful than a scan after ten changes.
Stage 3: oiling and fuel preparation
Disable fuel and ignition according to the correct service procedure, then crank only as needed to establish oil pressure. Confirm that the oil-pressure strategy and sensor reading are valid before enabling fuel.
Pressurize the low-side fuel system and inspect every connection. A dry garage floor is not enough; inspect the rail, HPFP area, injector seals, lines, and tank connections under pressure.
Never bypass fuel safety controls casually. If the pump runs continuously or pressure behaves unexpectedly, stop and correct the control logic.
Stage 4: first start
Have a fire extinguisher rated for the risks in the workspace, a second person watching the engine bay, and a clear shutdown plan. Monitor oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage, RPM, fuel pressure, and warning lights.
Do not rev the engine to “clear its throat.” Let it stabilize at the appropriate idle while you look for leaks, abnormal noise, smoke, belt movement, and contact between moving parts and the chassis.
Shut it down immediately for loss of oil pressure, fuel leakage, rapidly rising temperature, severe mechanical noise, uncontrolled RPM, or electrical smoke.
Stage 5: after the first run
Scan again and save the DTC report. Inspect fluids, fasteners, mounts, hose clamps, exhaust clearance, and wiring abrasion points. Recheck the transmission and differential for leaks before the first road test.
The first drive should be a short, low-load systems test—not a dyno pull. Verify steering, braking, cooling, charging, gear selection, vehicle-speed reporting, DSC behavior, and emergency access before increasing load.
Quick decision rule
If the car does not communicate, do not chase tuning. If it does not build fuel pressure, do not chase ignition. If oil pressure is uncertain, do not continue running it. The order of operations prevents expensive guesses.
