Avoiding the 'Racecar' Excuse
We all know a guy who does a massive engine swap and claims he ripped the A/C out "for weight reduction." Let's be honest: he ripped it out because making custom A/C lines is intimidating.
If you want your B58-swapped E90 to be a true OEM+ daily driver, retaining the factory air conditioning is non-negotiable. Luckily, there are highly established paths to making sure your cabin stays freezing cold.
The Hurdle: Compressor Placement and Belt Lines
The B58 native A/C compressor is driven by the serpentine belt system, but its mounting ears, clutch offset, and high-pressure line fittings are completely incompatible with the E9x factory A/C condenser and evaporator lines.
You have two options to solve this:
#### Option 1: Custom High-Pressure Lines (Using B58 Compressor)
You bolt the native B58 compressor to the B58 engine. This ensures your serpentine belt aligns perfectly without any guesswork.
However, you must now mate the B58 compressor's output fittings to the E90's hardlines. This requires:
- Cutting the aluminum fittings off both a B58 donor car and your E90 lines.
- Utilizing high-pressure barrier hose and custom A/C crimping tools (or taking it to a hydraulic hose shop) to build hybrid lines.
- Ensuring the E90's junction box (JBE) can successfully tell the B58 DME to engage the compressor clutch via CAN signals (which requires specific coding).
#### Option 2: The CNC Adapter Bracket (Using E90 Compressor)
This is widely considered the superior, cleaner method. Instead of fighting with making highly pressurized custom lines, you keep your entire, untouched E90 A/C system fully intact.
To mount the older E90 A/C compressor onto the modern B58 engine block, swap companies produce CNC-machined billet aluminum adapter brackets. This plate bolts directly to the B58, providing new threaded bosses that perfectly accept the E90 compressor.
A slight modification to the serpentine belt length is usually required to wrap around the older compressor's pulley, but the car's electronics remain perfectly happy because the original compressor is still plugged into the original wiring harness.
Build It Right, Build It Once
Sweating over custom lines is the definition of swap fatigue.
